Is John Worth 5 Minutes?
After reading his story, you’ll wonder if the VA Hospital thinks he is.
John M., Army MP 87 to 90, nobly served our country during Operation Just Cause in Panama. He has been plagued by an injury ever since. For years, he has struggled with the VA system. In and out of waiting rooms. Countless and repetitive forms. Over and over, with no real help. Year after year, until, yet again, he went to his area VA Hospital with shoulder pain so severe he couldn’t hold a cup of coffee. Their response?
‘Just don’t raise your hand above your head.’
Two days later John ended up in the emergency room at a civilian hospital. The damage was so severe, the pain John had lived with for so long was so intense, that it took 5 hours of surgery to repair.
John’s injury was ignored by the VA for YEARS.
Five hours of surgery after years of suffering, after years of trying to get help from the institution we all count on to provide care for our Veterans. After repeated dismissals like, ‘you’re fine. Just don’t lift your arm.’ Five hours of surgery from five minutes of, finally, someone caring enough to understand “This man needs our help.”
This man served our country. John served nobly. And there are thousands of other stories, just like John’s. And worse…
22 Veterans kill themselves every day
Each one of them is worth so much more than five minutes. Will you give them 5 minutes right now?
“These men and women need our help.”
It wasn’t the VA that finally gave John the care he needed. It wasn’t the government. Or, really, even the hospital. It was the one person who saw John in his moment of need and who did the right thing.
It was, quite simply,
An everyday American
Who took an extra few minutes
TO LISTEN – TO CARE – TO ACT.
The government didn’t solve John’s problem. They won’t solve the problems that so many of our Veteran’s face – problems that just need someone to take a few extra minutes to care – to make sure a Veteran who gave so much is getting the help they need – when they need it. Not five years later. Not five minutes too late.
It’s Up To Us.
We will listen. We will care. We will act.
